Dear Helen,
As things look now I will be a free man in a few days. Landed in Hoboken on May 23 and went to Camp Merritt. Left there on May 29 on a ten day furlough on account of my grandfather’s death. Reported here Sunday evening. This is a pretty good camp but no army camp looks very good to me just now.
On my way here Saturday I came over the L.O.& S. RR for the first time in two years. Came mighty close to getting sea-sick. It had all the motions of a transport in a storm.
All of my outfit was mustered out last Thursday. For a while I thought I would be out of luck and have to wait around here for a couple of weeks, but as things are going now. I will get out this week. Will know for certain tomorrow. That red chevron will sure look good to me.
Had intended to look you up while in Oxford last Sat. but found I did not have time between trains.
Sincerely yours
Joel C. SwisherP.S. By the looks of this letter the first thing I ought to do after getting out of the army would be to take a course in penmanship.
