Following Joel’s discharge from the Army, he stayed in Peach Bottom for a time, helping his aunts in the absence of his grandfather.
In December 1919, he went to Wichita, Kansas, to work at his father’s recently-started ice cream plant, Zipp Butter and Ice Cream Company.
On a visit back to Pennsylvania in June 1920, he became engaged to Helen Clement.
In January 1921, he accepted a position as a salesman for the James Manufacturing Co., makers of “sanitary barn equipment” at a salary of $100 per month plus traveling expenses. His choice of a traveling sales career may have been motivated by his travels in France, and his desire to “see more of my own country.”
Joel and Helen were married on December 27, 1921, at Oxford Friends Meeting in Oxford, Pennsylvania. They lived in Glenside and Abington, Pennsylvania, where they had four children. Helen passed away in 1958, and Joel passed in 1975, at the age of 79.

What a great story. Thank you so much for sharing it all this time. What a wonderful way to reflect on both him and a terrible and important time in our history.
He was what relation to you? Great-grandfather?
Glad you enjoyed it. He was my grandfather.
