I am in a house, not in one of these tents. This is a receiving station for recruits. It is on a small island on Long Island Sound about 20 miles NE of New York City. There are about 1000 soldiers here now. I expect to leave here in a few days. Don’t know where I will be sent. So far everything has been mighty interesting and nothing to kick about.

I remember JCS using that expression, “nothing to kick about.” I heard it again the other night on the Ken Burns documentary about Vietnam, by an elderly veteran, and that was 50 years later. He certainly must have been nervous, not knowing where he was being sent next, but always put the best face on things for the folks back in Peach Bottom.
